The diverse landscape, the rich fauna and flora and, last but not least, the archaeological treasures of ancient cultures make Peru one of the most popular travel destinations in Latin America. The eclectic food and the friendly Peruvian people with their traditional lifestyle are also reasons for visitors to feel so comfortable in Peru.

The Peruvian geography ranges from the dry coastline on the pacific-shore, across the Andes-plateau with its peaks sometimes more than 6.000 meters high, to the tropical forest in the Amazon-basin. This variety makes Peru to one of the countries with the highest biodiversity worldwide and to the home of rare plants and animals. Apart from beautiful landscapes, Peru surprises with many old towns which owe their well kept historical city centres to the Spanish colonization. The vibrant city of Lima with more than 9 million inhabitants is one of the most interesting capitals of the continent and attracts with beaches, modern business and shopping districts and a lot of culture. The bars and discotheques of pulsating Miraflores and Barranco night life are visited night by bight by young limeños and visitors from all over the world.

The archaeological heritage of Peru is overwhelming. The Inca-fortress Machu Picchu in the mountains of Cusco is Peru’s landmark and was recently voted to be one of the new seven world wonders. But there are hints of even older civilizations: The stone architecture of Chavín, the pyramids and ceramic art of the Moche culture, the impressing geoglyphs of Nazca, the brickearth-architecture of the Chimú and rests of the Wari- and Tiahuanaco-culture just to mention a few. They all bear witness of art and habits of the pre-Hispanic people.

The culture in modern Peru is a result of mixtures of Andean people, people from the Amazon and Spaniards. But also Africans, Asians and emigrants from all of Europe have enriched Peruvian culture and lead to this unique mixture which can be seen in gastronomy, literature and music. Today’s Peru is a democratic republic with an increasing solid economic growth of lately more than 8%. Also the tourism-sector announces records. However, Peru still is a developing country with a poverty-rate of almost 40%. Main economic activities are extracting mineable resources, agriculture and fishery. Also textile products and preserve-food are manufactured and exported.
